Navaids Performance Prediction Model (NPPM) by the Ohio University Avionics Engineering Center is an engineering simulation tool for analyzing the signal-in-space performance and coverage of ground-based navigation aids around airports and terminal areas. It helps planners and engineers evaluate siting options, understand terrain and obstacle effects, and assess compliance with relevant aviation standards before installation or modification of facilities.

Key capabilities:

  • Predicts signal coverage and course structure for common ground-based navaids (e.g., ILS localizer and glide slope, VOR, DME)
  • Models 3D terrain and obstacles to quantify multipath and other interference from natural and man-made features
  • Evaluates course bends, roughness/scalloping, clearance, and sector coverage along intended flight paths
  • Supports what‑if scenarios to assess the impact of new construction, cranes, or layout changes on existing navaid performance
  • Provides metrics and visualizations that align with typical FAA/ICAO performance criteria to aid in compliance assessments
  • Integrates with geospatial data sources to streamline site surveys and design studies

Typical outputs:

  • Coverage maps and areas of potential signal degradation
  • Error envelopes and course structure plots along approaches and radials
  • Comparative reports for alternative antenna locations, heights, and configurations

Who uses it:

  • Airport authorities and air navigation service providers
  • Certification and regulatory teams
  • Navaid manufacturers and integrators
  • Aviation planning and engineering consultants

Benefits:

  • Reduces risk, cost, and rework by identifying issues before deployment
  • Shortens project timelines by minimizing trial-and-error in the field
  • Improves confidence in siting decisions and facilitates smoother approvals

Navaids Performance Prediction Model is developed by Ohio University Avionics Engineering Center. The most popular versions of this product among our users are: 4.0, 4.1 and 10.2.
